Why Give to Fork Union Military Academy

Fork Union Military Academy can only exist because people like you care enough to support the school with your time, talents, and treasure. As a non-profit organization, we must rely on our donors to provide the financial support needed to carry out our mission.

The Academy Fund

The first and greatest need of the Academy is to fund our operations each year. Tuition only provides part of the costs to operate the school. The rest of the money must come from our donors. Each year, part of our annual budget must be provided by our annual giving campaign to The Academy Fund.

Giving an annual gift to The Academy Fund is like putting money into the school's checking account. It ensures that your gift will have an immediate impact in helping Fork Union Military Academy meet its mission right now.

Our goal is to raise at least $500,000 for The Academy Fund before the end of the fiscal year (June 30th) to help support our annual expenses related to financial aid, staff salaries, and other educational and operational expenses.

The Endowment

The strength and stability of any non-profit organization like Fork Union Military Academy rest on the bedrock of its endowment. An endowment is money that has been invested so that it generates income from interest or other earnings. This income can then be used to fund scholarships and programs while leaving the principal amount untouched to continue earning income.

An endowment is like a fruit tree orchard. The seeds of your donations are planted and trees added, which are carefully tended and preserved. As those trees increase and grow, they will produce more and more fruit each year that will sustain future generations for many decades into the future, in perpetuity.

While annual giving produces an immediate impact and benefit during a year, gifts to the endowment have a permanent and lasting impact, ensuring that the mission of Fork Union Military Academy can continue long into the future.

Fork Union Military Academy's endowment currently totals just over $20 million, and within the next few years, our goal is to grow our endowment to at least $50 million.

Capital Improvements and Special Projects

The campus and facilities of Fork Union Military Academy are physical manifestations of our donors' generosity. Each building, athletic field, and laboratory exists because the Academy's many benefactors gave gifts to support their creation. Many of these facilities bear the name of their principal donor (the Estes Athletic Center, Jacobson Hall, Carruthers Tennis Courts, etc.) or are named in honor of someone special to the donor or the Academy. Some of these capital projects are large in scope, such as our $20 million barracks building, and some are small in size but have a large positive impact on our cadets, such as the Chain Computer Lab.

At any one time, Fork Union Military Academy might have a number of fundraising campaigns to support various capital improvements and special projects. There are many opportunities for donors to give to specific projects that are meaningful to them. Gifts to these projects produce a tangible result within a few years and can have an enduring impact on our campus and programs.

Ways to Give

Matching Gifts

Many companies offer matching gift programs, some even matching dollar for dollar. You can perhaps double the impact of your donation just by asking your company to match your contribution. The guidelines and requirements for matching gifts can vary from company to company, but it is often an easy way to increase the impact of your gift.

Combined Federal Campaign

Federal employees, contractors, and retirees can support Fork Union through the Combined Federal Campaign, with a one-time contribution or by making a gift through a payroll deduction so that a small amount given each pay period has the potential to add up to a more significant gift throughout the year.
