Two Fork Union Military Academy cadets showcased outstanding leadership and public speaking skills at the inaugural Revolutionary Rhetoric Debate Meet, held over three days in the historic Capitol building of Williamsburg, Virginia. Competing in congressional debate, cadets Nicholas Coleman and Joseph Athey tested their abilities against more than 20 participants, with topics centered around the American Revolutionary era.

Coleman secured a tie for third place overall, while Athey earned a tie for sixth, reflecting the skills they've honed as members of Fork Union's debate team. The competition gathered some of Virginia's top congressional debaters in a venue that once witnessed pivotal discussions in American history, providing a unique and inspiring backdrop for parliamentary-style debate.

The historic setting left a lasting impression on the cadets. "It was an incredibly unique experience," said Coleman. "Being surrounded by so much history really immersed us in the debates. I'm definitely looking forward to hopefully returning next year."

Athey echoed similar sentiments: "The entire experience was truly one of a kind. The three-day format allowed us to build friendships and camaraderie before the full debate season starts. But there was also a strong competitive spirit—everyone was highly motivated to research and write compelling speeches, leading to intense debates."

Debate Coach CPT Michael Head expressed his pride in his cadets' performance: "I couldn't be prouder of Nicholas and Joseph. Their success in this competition is a testament to the work ethic and discipline they've developed at Fork Union. They are balancing leadership roles, athletic commitments, academics, and extracurriculars. Seeing them succeed against competitors who don’t have these additional responsibilities only reinforces how exceptional they are. I’m honored to have them on the team and look forward to seeing them represent the Academy as future alumni."

The Revolutionary Rhetoric Debate Meet is expected to become an annual tradition, highlighting the lasting importance of reasoned debate and public discourse in academic competition.
